Hi guys,
just to update you all on this..... Zone Alarm sees the update as an attack (as the update changes some system files for networking). The update is legit of course. There are a few ways to sort this out. 1) Uninstall the update (not recommended as it is a legit security update) 2) Put Zone Alarm to "Medium" security and all is supposed to work fine. (As soon as Zone Alarm fix the problem you can put it back to "High" 3) Apparantly by resetting Zone Alarm database it will not be a problem (you'll need to refer to Zone Alarm on how to do this.) Hope this helps, Regards RiRa |

Sorry to let you know, but ZoneAlarm is one of the absolute worst Firewall softwares there is. There's more bugs and security issues with it then there's actual security in it. Google for exploits for ZoneAlarm, for each release they make there's yet another easy way to take down the ZoneAlarm firewall

As much as possible I never put Windows on Auto Update for any systems I personally control.
I normally will go to the MS update site manually every couple of weeks or so to check (unless there is some major urgent issue to update). This is due to the fact that there have been a number of cases where MS borks the PC after an update / borks due to some other software conflict. Waiting a while and checking on the updates before I get it installed pretty much assures me that I don't have a broken PC after an update. This way, either the other software vendors will have fixed whatever conflicts, or MS will have removed the broken update and release a new update (update for an update?) which does not have issues. |

![]() and any general comments re impressions of ZA In stealth and full version I get a very good security, it is only the occassional bug I have to fix like this. ...you dont specify if you mean the free version of the layered version which you pay for. Kinda like ZA the other is Kapersky but it's firewall is not so strong! |

I didn't post an alternative one because I don't use one. Protecting your PC with the security software on the same PC that you are going to protect is insanity. If you do so the threat has allready passed all the 7 (8) OSI TCP/IP layers of your PC before it's finally checked by some local software
. I use external protection, I have a gateway/firewall server running ipcop ( www.ipcop.org ) for my ethernet connection, and I have a Dlink DIR-635 as firewall for my wireless connection. Then the threat is filtered before even passed on to your PC at all.Quote:

Had the same problem as a number of you, uninstalled and reinstalled Zone Alarm and now the internet works. Sadly doing that somehow unleashed some spyware /popups that are now giving me issues, probably been sitting in my computer waiting for my firewall to go down so it could move around and install itself, argh.
