hehe, i think you wrote that in the last thread on the subject. so there might be something to it, lets not dismiss it out of hand, the PvP, new spawn nearby or presence of a deposit field make some sence for what perception means. but why no theory related to serendipity that actually means precisely what people are attributing to the perception gain

I always get a perception skill gain when there is loot bigger then 2 PED around.
Also I always get anatomy and inflict ranged damage before I global. Before I got my highest global (175 PED) I even got a genetics skill up. Even weirder is, I also get perception skill ups while scanning, even if there is only one mob around and even if it had no loot at all ![]() |

I think it's a case of people looking at the name of the skill, and then reading into it more than it is.
In RL perception might work the way some think it does in EU. MA could have called it "nose picking skill", and made it a % contributor to Pro-Standings. Then people would say "every time I pick my nose, I find something." Yeh, right, but I would not want to know what they found, or how big it was. Gaining perception means just what it says. You gained Perception. Beyond that, it means nothing. OC, this is my personal opinion. Feel free to hold your own personal opinions. |

The fact that there isn't more agreement on this issue in spite of everyone keen to find any advantage in their loot should be evidence enough that it's a delusion. |

Eh, if people think it works for them then great.. If people don't think it works then - great?
Personally I think there might be a trend between perception gains and item in loot (or bigger mining finds). I could say that I've looted a lot of H400s by "following perc"; while hunting with my disciple we "followed perc" and looted a Minor TP chip. As has been said though, what about the other skills? We'd both have been getting a heck of a lot of skills though, was it actually one of them leading us to the loot? Was it actually just normal skill gains and good fortune? I'm just open-minded about it, the only thing that convinces me there's a link between loot in the area and skill gains is that when mining on CND I gain skills a lot quicker than on Calypso. |

i personally believe that people are perceiving patterns that don't exist - we're hard wired to do that, after all
it's like any other skill - the name itself doesn't matter - all every skill does is contribute to your pro standing(s) ... would you go out searching for that "bigger loot" or "global" if you saw, "You have gained Skill-28."? |

I used the "gain perception -> slaughter everything on radar and THEN some" methodology and maybe less than 1/3 of the time, I got something better than average. The majority of times, however, I got the usual--or worse, more no-loots than usual. Frankly, I don't *get* Perception gains often enough to "follow them".
I'd LIKE to conclude that there's some relation, but the only thing I CAN conclude is that there's far too little correlation between Perception gains and "a better loot/resource nearby" for the theory to hold water. I've had great loots without Perception gains; I've had tons of consecutive no-loots following a Perception gain, and the odd time, a "something better" loot following a Perception gain. |
