Q's about scanning

Is Scanning a skill? (If this thread belongs somewhere else, Mods, do your thing.)

I have heard references to "Scanning" I'll of course continue searching here and elsewhere, but what's the basics? I found a button in "Avatar" that said "scan" and I tried it but all that happened was I walked up to the other ava and looked at him. Then we started playing again.

Do I need a tool to do it?
What would I learn?
Does the other Ava know they are being scanned?
How would I know if I was being scanned?

Yep. You can pickup a scanner at the trade terminal. It does give you skilling in scanning as well as other general skills. There is much discussion on this forum about whether or not the scanning skill has any value...

what value does it have? If it was a biggie, it would be easier to find threads about it.

To sumarize the arguements:

1. Scanning skill has no real value
2. Other skills gained while scanning do have value

Some of these other skills are things like anatomy, computer, etc. are useful with crafting, hunting and even mining.

In my opinion, you are better off gaining those skills from actually crafting, hunting, or mining...

Scanning robots can actually be profitable, if you have high enough dodge.
