Sweatiquette

I'm still a shiny orange newbie, but I've observed a lot of things that make sweating a better process for everyone. By "better" I mean a little easier, funner and slightly less frustrating.

1. The first thing you must realize, and it's the hardest notion to conquer, is that dying is not a bad thing (with some exceptions like if you're hunting, but for the most part, if you're new, dying isn't bad). You lose no possessions, peds or skills for dying. You get automatically respawned and and you're back up and running. In fact, I read a guide on the wiki that encouraged newbies to run around the mobs like headless chickens for awhile, just for the sake of getting used to dying often and painlessly. You'll actually gain some defensive skills for doing so. (Just don't do it where there are people actually trying to accomplish something.)

2. If you're among a group of sweaters, don't run away just because a mob is attacking you. This causes the mob to chase you, which causes the other sweaters to have to chase after the mob or get a new one. More than likely you'll attract other mobs to the group, which means there's a bunch of mobs attacking everyone now.

3. The only exception to the Don't Run rule is when the mob is dry (no more sweat). If you have a dry mob attacking you, then everyone would really love it if you could run back to the turret and get the thing killed so it stops attacking the group. It's of no use to sweaters anymore.

4. If your fresh off the mother ship, Swamp Camp is a nice place to start. There's often a lot of chaos, but a also lot of people to answer your questions. You'll find a lot of people running around like headless chickens with mobs on their heels, so you won't be the only one.

5. After you get used to how the whole sweating thing works and are ready for a more organized approach, try Nea's Place. The sweaters there are generally more experienced and the chaos is usually at a minimum.

6. Be respectful. In a social game like this, your reputation will start to precede you. So if you're being rude because you think it's funny, remember that there are real people behind those pixels. They'll remember you and tell the people around them about you. They'll start avoiding you if you're being a prick, which will make trading later pretty darn hard. Likewise if you garner yourself a reputation for excellence (you follow the group rules, you help fellow players, display general manners, etc) people will start to invite you to their teams, events or what have you.

7. Be patient. There is no quick path to riches or success. If all you can see is "how can I make more peds" then you will not have fun. Sweating will be a chore. Find ways to amuse yourself while you sweat. If you don't want to be social, that's fine. Watch TV, read a magazine, do something else while you're waiting for your avatar to charge up and pull the sweat.

8. Read the ongoing chats that are going on around you while you sweat. You've got nothing better to do, so see if someone is discussing something interesting. You'll learn some things. You'll start to feel a sense of camaraderie with the other sweaters, crack a few jokes, maybe make a few friends. Be social, it's part of what makes this game fun, and you'll find that sweating isn't so monotonous after all.

That's all I can think of for now, but feel free to add your own observations or advice. I'm always open to suggestions myself!

Great post, with sound advice.

You speak much sense for one so "young"

I'll add one more piece of "Sweatiquette" though, if I may...

Don't Shoot Mobs that people are sweating, until they're DRY. It's rude and inconsiderate. There are plenty of places to go and hunt, but not so many where people can sweat in a group. I see sooo many people at Swamp Camp who will happily run up and kill the mob you're trying to sweat. It drives me almost mental. How can people not think this is hugely rude?

I agree! It is extremely rude. I thought about including this too, but then I decided it was hunter etiquette. *shrug* Whatever it is, it needs to be acknowledged by everyone! I just don't think that the people who do that would be reading this particular forum.

Great post!

Adding another idea...

Once you are ready for Neas, have a listen for any teams that are forming. Went on a team sweat & kill today, Opalos and CB5's only (there were about 9 or 10 of us) Not only was it great fun, but I gathered a lot of sweat, and with the two globals we hit, made a few peds. It was well done and organized.

Coming from both side of the fence on this one

Whilst I agree its a bit rude to run up and deliberately kill an animal someone is sweating, if someone is sweating nearby and the animal attacks the hunter, he is perfectly entitled to blast the creature out of existence.

I like the hunters at Swamp camp, remember they help removing the dry ones and if they are using a slowish weapon (amped opalo for example) you can get a sweat cycle in whilst it is attacking him.

I would therefore make the sweating etiquette to be: Please dont kill whilst a sweaters green beam is on.

Most people do this anyway from my experience.

Finally, there isn't a shortage of red dots at SC, there's always another one.

My on this thorny issue.

Nice! Thanks for mentioning this. I enjoy those sweat-hunting teams at Nea's too. Usually nicely organized and usually healers to help you too. I don't think I ever came away with more than I went with (ammo disappears rather quickly) but overall it's a very positive experience. I take the least amount of damage during sweating when participating in one of these teams.

Back in my Camp Phoenix sweating days, people would shoot and tank the mobs while our friendly OJs would sweat them. I still do this on occasion. Maybe change that statement to, "Don't Kill the mobs that people are sweating."
