Ok so I fitted the 3850, it worked for a few minutes and then windows froze as I put the driver CD in the CDROM drive.

PC wasn't able to POST (power up) since and so I believe the PSU to not be supplying enough power to the graphics card (fan spins on it then stops)

Upon checking the box it does say that 450w is a minimum and mine is only 431w.

Ordered a 610w PSU which hopefully shall arrive tomorrow!


(All capacitors lovely and flat and not at all bulgy btw )

Thats good. I only mention it, because it is a real pain beating your head against a wall trying to fix one thing, when it is something else entirely...

Well if the 610W PSU doesnt allow the 3850 to fire up, it'll have to be posted back.

This would be funny if it was happening to anyone else. Unfortunately for me, its happening to me.

I've built and upgraded a lot of systems over the years but it seems that newer motherboards like having 24 pin connectors from the PSU, and mine is the older type than requires a 20 pin connector.

Guess which type my new PSU supports? Correct 24 pin non detachable only.

So I need another PSU with a 20/24 pin connector and need to post this back.

I was hoping to do a subsequent thread explaining how to easily upgrade your old pc so that it could run Cryengine 2, but I dont think I will be any longer....

Bought a 460W 30A PSU from a crappy local shop - that wouldnt even fire up - that's going straight back.

Now ordered a 650W 52A Corsair PSU for delivery tomorrow.

All this effort for shiny armor... I dunno

You don't need a different PSU, if it doesn't fit, you can get a 24-20 pin (and also 20-24 pins) convertor almost anywhere

Didnt know that PC shop guy certainly didn't mention it.

Aw well, new PSU is already at the couriers and I have an RMA number for the old.

First of all, if you are still reading this thread ...

Congratulations!

Ok, 650W PSU fits nicely and is quiet with 120mm fan blowing inside the case (no exhaust fan to the rear) all cables in black sleeves and connectors a matching black.

That's the good news.


The bad news is that the graphic card still fails to start, the fan spins on power up and then stops with no "on power" beep (ie. not passing the Power On Self Test) and yes, the power lead is connected to the back.


So, I have to conclude that the card has passed on! This GC is no more! It has ceased to be! it's expired and gone to meet its maker! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! It's pushing up the daisies! it's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off it's mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!
THIS IS AN EX-GRAPHIC CARD!!


Refund requested, I'll try and buy another in a month or two (when they are even cheaper, hopefully )

Hopefully I wont be too much out of pocket. If the one company confirm the card is dead then they wont have a problem refunding and if the other company accept back the first PSU then they may wave the "restocking fee" and I'll be just have lost out on the return postage.

Could be worse, at least I didnt drop any of the PSU's on the motherboard during all the swaps destroying my PC in the process!

In my experience blue screen kernel memory dumps or unanounced restarts signifies something on your mother board is taking a crap or your hard drive is about to push daisys, also yes, could be power supply.
