Unlimited SIB is your friend.
Even when it is maxed you can still gain good skills from it, and it is very economical, because you don't have to pay markup to buy a new one (you can repair), while it is maxed so you don't miss often.

I have nothing but personal experience to back it up but I really think there are a variety of "unseen" factors that affect the amount of skill gains we get. I primarily skill HG but have 4k rifle; a couple of weeks ago my then-disciple and I had a hunt, both using Riker UL1s. In the same time period I got 4-5 times more rifle skill points than she did, despite the fact my rifle skill was essentially twice hers and despite the fact we were using the same gun - a gun we'd both long-since maxed.

Having said that it does also "feel" like if you use a weapon that is maxed much lower than your pro-standing you progress slower than if you use something nearer to your pro-standing. If I used my P5A (maxed at level 21) on a decent-length hunt and then used an HL11 (maxed at level 34) for a hunt of the same length I would expect (and get) more skills from the latter gun. Conventional logic would surely suggest that if you have two people with identical setups the lower-skilled player would gain more skills on a fixed-length hunt because as we all know skill-gains slow as you get more of them.

What is a good UL weapon to switch to?

I did pick up a cheap Fussel Charade arouund 50ped and I took it on a run NICE damage but I was averaging about 35-40 dmg per hit and the misses came in spurts Hit x6 then miss x3; hit x8 then miss x4 ... and blowing 11 ammo on a 35 damage is ummm not economical.

Also I want to try to get away from the (L) weapons as they are coming up on 200+ ped each now once I get to lvl 15 and that is a bit expensive..

I even started to work up an crafter to craft my own weapons but WOW I did not realize the sink that is 42% max COS wow the house in Vegas don't even have those odds

i went from the riker UL3 to a Justifier mk1 + scope and lasers...a mk2 is also recomended...very good weapon...

or switch to handgun...i did...skilled some with a ep-22/ep-40 and then korss 400(L)...oh...right...no (L)'s...i recomend the ep-40

I tried loaning out my Riker UL3 (unL) but the big problem is collaterial, if you guys want to use it and have the collaterial pm me. If only MA introduced a loaning system, then we could all be happy. Anyway the Riker UL3 is worth the price if your looking for a good unL weapon to hunt medium mobs with. The costs is a bit high I think your running tt+5k now, but that will probably go up some more so it can be considered an investment.

Yep, as others have said stay away from Unlimited weapons till at least level 90 hit/dmg professions

Keep using the (L) weapons for now.

personally i like the mkii have been using for about a year its a good gun with decent damage put a 104 on if u hunt big thing and scope and laser it and it works mighty fine

Food for thought... something we newbies need to keep in mind is that UL weapons and item drops are diminishing very rapidly. By the time we hit level 90 they may be all gone.

I tend to stick mainly with (L) guns for skills and eco, but I do have my own FreanD Delta + Beast in storage along with a few other choice UL arms. Better buy the weapons you want now before they become as rare as a Mod Fap in a year or two.

Back then when I reached about 2k in rifle, I moved to MK2 and MK3, but back then there was no L weapons...
Anyway, when you can't afford buying new weapon with learning period in your class (laser carbine in your example) you have 2 choices, as Immortal wrote: you can stay with laser, but switch to pistols (which will give you RDA faster due to skilling LWT) or to stay with rifles, but BLP (which gives you only being more universal, but you will have to wait for RDA a bit longer). I am mainly pistoleer at the moment and I do not regret. But to be honest I would love to have more BLP Weap Tech to use my Maddox IV on more regular basis, not only as "holy crap!" weapon... If you plan to hunt only mobs, laser and carbine/pistol combo is quite ok.
Alternatively, you can stay with weapon you were using so far. Using maxed out weapon should allow you for quite eco hunting. But this way you won't be able to hunt bigger mobs than you used to hunt before... I would reccomend switching to carbine/pistol combo, I can assure you that you won't regret it.

I'm running into the same problem. I just went through my first M4a...those things are so expensive and break so fast. I may just stick to a UL2 to skill on until I can use something better and cheaper...
