You'd bog down the client in no time.

Text chat from multiple sources comes in faster than human speech.

To accomodate this, you'd have to either queue the stuff up in an ever increasing wait for the TTS engine.

If you want an example of this and how bad it would work, download MIRC, download Microsoft Agent, enable MIRCs text to speech function, then go into any crowded IRC channel.

Run many instances of the TTS engine in order to handle parallel speech queues. This would eat up system resources like nobodys business.

I don't have a working example of this other than trying to run 7 or 8 audio intensive programs under entropia and see how it handles.



Stick to 3rd party VOIP apps like Roger Wilco Mk Ic, Team Speak, and Ventrilo. These let you communicate effectively with the people you *want* to communicate with, and without spam, spyware, or other bothers.

About time IMO . Virtual universes are possibly the last best hope where humans with disabilities can be living and interacting without anyone having any idea. Instant normal human with no preconceptions. Just add MMO .

It makes no difference at all and never will. How good is that when you realise how little interest the average Entropian has in such things?

Distant future is my bet. But, unless MA forgets it, they probably come around implenting it some time.
As Etopia said, it would be cool that as further away you are from a guy the lower the sound is, like in real life. So if you wanna talk to someone you have to stay close to him. You could even make a shouting option, but I think that would just be annoying


As for the crippeld ppl, there is with Vista a voice to text option. Didn't work that well on Vista I think, and might be overkill for EU. But its a though

Why I'm against it:
  • There's way more than one language and english is only ranked #3 behind chinese-mandarin and spanish. So there will be people complaining.
  • You'd have to set a main language in the options but would probably use a different language some time during playing. E.g. you're french, set the language to "french" and then talk to somebody in english. Don't forget to tape down your toe nails before you do that!
  • That would so not work on people who keep using slang in their language. That's actually hard to read already
  • MA started the internationalization (or I18N as we call it ) with the translated front ends. And as far as I can remember just a rather small number of texts were translated.
  • People make typoes and I don't want to hear those. Nothing against dyslexia of course but listening to them would turn out strange.
  • Go to PA and enjoy the insanity. Actually PA would rather mean Public Announcment then...
  • Imagine hearing all global messages.
  • The talk-noise we hear now was cut short to something like 10 seconds a while ago. Before that the talk-noise was on as long that player was typing (and even longer because of a bug). So I'd say there was complaint about the talk-noise already.
  • I'd probably won't be able to listen to my MP3s anymore.

I could probably think of some more reasons.

Some nice replies and good arguments for and against

Whether we get it or not, what this kind of post does is brainstorm ideas like this out there with others using the same interests.

Pushing technologies to the boundaries and beyond is what makes things great, sitting back and accepting what we have is boring and soon becomes old.

We would need to filter out the Text to speech like we do in trade/soc/regular chat


But imagine listening to: STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR buy sweat .5 STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR

which translates to this in text:
*************
buy sweat .5
*************

And on busy days when people press enter and spam at the same time:
STAR DASH BUY SELL ORES mkII STAR MOD SELL STAR CRAFT STAR SWEAT STAR POOP + GROWTH STAR STAR

It would be chaos


I'd love to see speech to text, or better yet, speech to speech be put in. Talking, like in x-fire, would be much better than the way we type, as been said by my soc mates .
