i expect you mean china by "those", but its all over the world. anywhere you employ cheap labour there is scope for corruption and if you make a product the locals cant afford there's incentive and less moral objection. im pretty certain i heard of this years ago with the driver software for a camera or somthing.

The news is not sooo new.

But what do you expect?

1) Outsourcing manufacturing in countries who are not just far away, but also where people are working for like 200 usd per month, this making every single worker there very sensible to corruption.
2) Having NO real control over the manufacturing process, especially not in the detail
3) Different mentality.
4) Outsourcing technology is just the cherry on top. Did you saw what happens to the transrapid of germany? They wanted to contruct it there. In the end, the deal was way less profitable than expected and as "bonus", the chinese presented their "new train", which was a 1 to 1 copy.

Many many countries and many companies who tried to access (vulgo: exploit) the chinese market returned with a bloody nose, loss of technology, market share and reputation. Only very few "succeed" in that market.

Lets be realisitic
Best is to not try to enter that market, at most try to exploit it, but be very careful. Every investment, also buying, just leads them to be stronger in many sense and ultimately kicking us the butt.

This is pure cyber terrorism.

Not long ago a certain model of a seagate (i think?) portable hard-disk also contained a trojan that was designed to steal login details for WoW and other online games.

Well said, paranoia is one of the fastest spreading viruses.
Isn't that why we buy AV software ? lol .....this in the wrong section
