Cool WOF Banner

I just noticed the WOF banner here on EF.

Brilliant!

The effort on the graphics has always been an added bonus to the WOF, and this year is no different!

Keep it up!

Getting pumped!

Rage...building...checking account....falling...

Clam was the same guy that did all the graphical scoreboards etc last year.

Blood, sweat, tears and Photoshop

Thanks very much

I was going to write a blog piece about this as a small insight to the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff that goes on in the WoF but as this is here I’ll do it here.

The concept for the banner came up months ago and was supposed to be up at the start of the year but I just couldn’t get my head around how to do it. The original Idea was supposed to start with a close up of four avatars (uber-like) and then pan out to platoons of support teams and then pan out to thousands of mobs closing in on them, then going into the comic book action scenes. Imagine one of the big battle scenes in Lord of the rings… a bit like that. Now this would have been quite easy using screen shots taken from various angles and then all bunged together in Photoshop, however, I wanted to have the action scenes hand drawn and I didn’t want to mix mediums. That meant drawing a cast of thousands and to be honest I found weeks of drawing for what would have been four seconds of ‘banner footage’ a bit too much. So time ticked by and I procrastinated. Then a few days before it would have been too late to put the banner up I came up with the idea of using the radar to tell the story rather than drawing it. So I mocked up a radar and then enlisted Hurrikane to tell the story (He is a story teller after all). I then asked him to one evening sit down and position the dots and come up with some words to put over it. I put my own little touches in at the end (the guy TP-ing in and dieing at the end) and what would of taken weeks suddenly took an evening. Another good thing that came out of Hurrikane manoeuvring the dots was that in his naivety he accidentally duplicated the background WoF logo loads of times. This looked a lot better than the logo displayed singularly and from this mistake it was then refined to a much better background than it was originally. Well done Quake! After the first stage of the banner was complete the rest of it fell into place quite quickly. The action scenes turned out better than I expected them to. The shock waves and the smoke from the missile in the Atrox scene were especially satisfying to see work. There were a few more touches I wanted to put in, like shells exiting from the mini sweeper and a few more fades but that would of made the file size to big. All in all, I’m pleased with the way it turned out even if the grammar isn’t 100% (It should read ‘Whose side are you on? Not ‘Who’s side are you on? But there we go, you can’t have it all )
The aim is for this years WoF to surpass last years not only in game but in the Forum also. It is also really nice to see people using the WoF logo in their team signatures. It really illustrates the popularity of the WoF.
I am currently constructing the scoreboards, tables and more excitingly (for me anyway) Illustrating the characters from the superb ‘The commentators’ thread.
Below are some of the characters that ended up on the ‘cutting room floor’. Just because I thought it might be interesting for people to see.
Enjoy!

This WoF is on!!!

I'm really starting to think that the standard fee of a can of Stella and a smoke is not enough... I may bring nibbles next time
